Breathwork, is a term that applies to conscious alteration of breathing, when used with a therapeutical or meditative approach. There are many different approaches and schools of breathwork all with very valuable and specific benefits. The common agreement of all is that through breathwork we can attain alternate states of consciousness, and that sustained practice of breathwork techniques result in psychological and/or spiritual benefits.
NATURAL BREATH...
I have been trained in the approach called "NATURAL BREATH", widely taught and practiced in Turkey by NFS, Master Academy founded by Nevsah Fidan. The "Natural Breath" approach is mainly based on the philosophy of Dr. Judith Kravitz, founder of The Transformational Breath Foundation.
The aim of "Natural Breath" is to make us rediscover our very first breath, as a newborn baby. Open, natural, whole and connected breathing...So we actually are BORN with a perfect breath...
As of age 3-4 we start "holding" our breath due to negative thoughts and experiences. Through breathwork, by opening our breath we free up and release energies or blockages accumulated in our body as a result of these experiences.
The after-effect of a breathwork session is an enormous sense of relief. Old patterns of holding begin to gently break up and a new sense of aliveness enters as the breath anchors one's self in the present. We clearly have a sense of being "purified" and "reborn" !
The benefits of breathwork are substantial at 3 levels
Physical Benefits
We start breathing much easier and effectively. Most of us take in much less oxygen that we actually need, due to our limiting breathing habits. With "Natural Breath" we start letting enter much more oxygen in our body, hence our cell generation process speeds up, our muscles get stronger and our whole metabolism gets faster, therefore strengthening our immune system. This explains all the "miraculous healing stories" we hear of individuals who have done breathwork.
Mental / Emotional
Our mental and emotional bodies take care of the events that cause our breathe to "close" at first place.
They work to transform the negative effects of traumas, unexpressed, repressed feelings, memories, beliefs and thoughts. All of these are actually recorded on the memories of our cell throughout the years; they accumulate and block our systems. When we "hold" or "limit" our breath we let them live inside of us and continue to block us.
When we start opening our breath, we start cleaning our system from all these negatives and transform them into positives. It is a sort of "mental/emotional" cleansing and detoxification process.
Spiritual benefits
When our breath starts opening and liberating itself, and our mental / emotional bodies get cleaned up, we have more place in our body for the Spirit and for our spiritual awakening to take place.
We gain more spiritual conciousness, we start living an expansion where we go beyond the consciousness and reality we are in and we reach a certain spiritual level where we are more "awoken", "serene" and "confident in ourselves and the universe.
The benefits we receive on each of these levels, depend on the individual and their specific needs.
The further our breath is opened and is "flowing" naturally, the more our life "flows" in a positive direction...
